Target audience: Parents of K-5th grade
Carole Lapidus will focus her discussion on the impact of technology on our children and how parents can help by managing and monitoring this input. Technology is here to stay. While children today are “born digital”, most parents are “digital immigrants.” What does this mean? Can (should)
parents influence the place of technology in their children’s lives? Are the
lessons learned from the impact of TV relevant? Is there such a concept as too
much technology in a child’s life? Does overexposure to technology contribute
to “attention” problems? Bring your questions and observations to share. Carole will bring her vignettes and professional advice based on relevant research and her experience.
A few
questions:
Have you heard of Blackberry orphans? Of digital immigrants? Do you
know people who have been born digital?
Have you been for a walk noticing some trees covered with pink and
white flowers and others with leaf buds?
What does your child do showing you that she/he has the capacity to
focus for an extended period?
Comments from parents:
“Things are moving so fast…I feel like I’m missing something if I don’t
check my e-mail 50 times a day.” Is
this an exaggeration?
“I feel like I have less time to do the things I need to do. Why is
this? How did this happen?”
“When did my 4 year old begin to have tantrums if she couldn’t watch
HER shows or play HIS DSI? “
“What was life like for me as a child? Was I bored? How did I keep myself occupied?Do I even think about how life is different for my children?”
